Construction

Student Construction

Students construct each affordable house that they and other students have designed. They work under the guidance of a university professor and general contractor and are principally responsible for virtually all aspects of construction. Students also have a unique opportunity to work alongside trade professionals in order to perform tasks which students would not legally be allowed to perform (e.g. electrical, plumbing).

Construction Timeline

Term 1

Construction of the student-designed houses is typically completed in two 10-week terms. The first term begins with a completed foundation, and students proceed to frame the house – floors, walls, roof – and weatherproof it with windows, doors, siding, roofing, etc. By the end of the first term, the building is mostly complete on the outside and ready for drywall on the interior. Between terms, a drywall crew is hired to complete the interior walls and ceilings.

Term 2

During the second term, students add trim, make and install cabinets, apply flooring, and paint. The second term also is the time when the exterior is finished – porches, terraces, concrete walks and driveway, stormwater planters, and other landscape features are completed.

Outcomes

Overall, students who work at the OregonBILDS site learn about construction methods, construction materials, the proper and efficient use of tools, construction sequencing, and other important aspects of construction essential to becoming an accomplished and effective designer. Efficient and appropriate use of materials, techniques such as Advanced Framing and infiltration control, and effective and safe use of tools are stressed throughout both terms. Students collaborate with educators and trade professionals to find a balance between affordability and sustainability.
